Illiterates and Scrambled Pups

H&H is a tasty place to eat if you're in the mood for a "Meat and Three." As is The Bear's Den so named because it is a block down College St. from my Alma Mater, Mercer University whose mascot is the Bears.
But if you want a real Macon tradition, you can't ignore Nu-Way Weiners. Nu-Way started in Macon a LONG time ago and has several stores scattered around Middle Georgia. They make a great breakfast to order, but they are most famous for their hot dogs. They have a 2 hot dog special which is a quick and easy lunch.
But perhaps my favorite thing, once you get past the name, is a Scrambled Dog. For years I wouldn't dare touch it. Since a "Slaw Dog" is a hot dog with cole slaw on it (nasty!) I figured (as you probably did) that a Scrambled Dog is a hot dog with scrambled eggs on it. BZZZT! Wrong-O!
Technically it is an open faced chili dog with oyster crackers on top. At least the Nu-Way version is. Columbus, GA claims to be the birthplace for the Scrambled Dog, and Dinglewood Pharmacy in downtown Columbus is supposedly the best. They had a man, named "Sarge" who served them up for decades until he recently retired. Their recipe is a bit different from Nu-Way's (check the menu1 link on this page and you'll see it under "Platters").
I personally perosnally order a small fry with it, and dump them on top for instant chili fries, and a healthy dose of catsup rounds it all out. We'll get to that eventually. The important thing is that there are lots of variations on what a Scrambled Dog is. Check here under the "Georgia, United States" section.
It didn't take long, or many chili pups for me to realize that I could make my very own Krystal Scrambled Pups. And heck Krystal already had everything I needed. Just order the 3 Pups combo (I left off the mustard and onions and went chili only, but again you can be your own Sarge and do what you think is best!) Be sure to get the chili instead of the fries.
The bowl chili is not the same as the chili they put on the pups. The "Pup Chili" as they call it, is meat only. The bowl chili has beans. The bowl chili is also a bit runny for Scambled Dog use. If you have access to a slotted spoon, you can transfer the chili from the bowl to the pups with that. I used a fork, cause I was hungry and in a hurry.
Then because I like it that way I tossed on the oyster crackers that come free with your Krystal Chili (if they don't give you a pack or two, ASK!) I also put 2 packs of catsup on top because I like that, too!
You want to talk about delicious?!?! Man oh man this was good. And the best part is, you can get everything you need to make it yourself at Krystal in the Pup combo. Just a little extra work on your part. I would bet if you were nice to the folks at Krystal they'd happily pour the Chili over your pups for you and save a bowl!
Don't be surprised though if other people start asking for their chili on top, as I suspect "Scrambled Pups" will begin to sweep the nation! It's hot, it's delicious, its a bit messy. Just what everyone really wants for lunch! (Might want to tuck a napkin in your collar if you're in a suit!)
Man do I love them Pups!
Krystal Lovers like it steamy.

Alright Mr. Pup. Where's the CHEESE?! Damn.

Rip off Nu-Way and then don't even make it your own by adding cheese? You lost out on a perfect opportunity to give props to KRYSTAL CHEESE!

Those Scrambled Pups look great! Good idea. Me, I would add some KRYSTAL cheese...hehehehe. GLORY, GLORY!
