Pups, Trips, Ribs and Hockey

Lots of things tonight so strap on your helmet and lets get rolling!
Since the temp has dropped like a rock since yesterday and it is finally feeling like Winter (instead of Summer), I decided today would be a great day for some chili cheese pups. After all, when it's chilly outside, you want chili inside! After work I zip on over to Krystal and load up, on loaded pups.
You may recall, way back last June I was discussing the phrase "All the way" and how it applies to Krystals. More importantly I also explained how it does not apply (mayo). Along the way I mentioned my difficulty in getting chili cheese pups "all the way." When I think of "all the way" for dogs, I believe that means anything not nailed down behind the counter. Since I eventually wind up having to tell them I want "chili, cheese, onions, mustard, ketchup." I am certain there's got to be an easier way. I've been trying to think up a good nickname for these pups all the way and this evening it suddenly hit me:

Devil Pups

Here's where the name comes from. As you may recall my father's a retired Marine. Marine's are sometimes called "Devil Dogs" a nickname given to them by the Germans they faced in WW I. Since I work on an Air Force base, many people seem to think I have served in the military. Apparently I carry myself in a military manner. No I don't make my students do push ups for incorrect answers, but if I was allowed to, I assure you my students would either be really smart or in really good shape! I explain to people that being the son of a Marine, I must be a "Devil Pup." The term also applies since I was in Marine Corps JROTC in high school as well. I have always found the term to be quite funny and amusing, so I figured perhaps it would be well suited to my "Chili Cheese Pups All the Way." Let's face it, you can't deny the power of the US Marines, and you can't deny the power of a well dressed chili pup!
So now that we got that out of the way, what other things do we find on the Krystal Menu? Well there's the new combo, I had last week. But a recent post on Krystal-Lover blog announced the opening on what sounds like an amazing new Krystal up in Tennessee. Their menu apparently has some fantastic creations on it like Macaroni and Cheese bites, Milkquakes, and Philly Cheese Toaster sandwiches. My mouth began to water when I read this, and I quickly hit the Krystal.com store locator to find the new store.
It's located on Brainerd Rd in Chattanooga. Now here's the Krystal Koincidence. Last October while I was up in Chattanooga for the Krystal Square off I was staying with my friends Linda and Wes. When I was driving back to Macon I happened to find myself on Brainerd Rd. I chuckled to myself and thought,"If I ever move to Chattanooga I have to live on Brainerd Rd. It's got both Brain and Nerd in it, and I have one and I am the other."
This Krystal Koincidence cannot be ignored. I am now making plans to go and see this store and try the unique goodies they sell. From my estimates it will take more than one meal, so it may need to be an overnight trip. I am working on the logistics now, but hope to hit the highway soon. Perhaps as soon as this weekend. Maybe.
I am once again back in the "Road Trip" frame of mind, also known as "Cabin Fever." Two weeks ago, at work, we had to submit our leave projections for February and March. We plan our teaching schedule 2 or 3 months in advance, so we have to "estimate" our leave quite early. I dug out my calendar and got to work finding days to take off. Like most every year for the past 10 years, I started with the hockey schedule. Since Macon no longer has a team I have to road trip: Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama. Who knows.
I need a good hockey trip or two. I avoided hockey games, live and on TV for a long time while mourning the retirement of Steve Yzerman, my favorite player and one of the greatest athletes in history. But early in January they retired his jersey. I listened to the ceremony online and watched the few clips they showed on Versus. It was the biggest event in hockey and they show a whopping 4 minutes out of a 1 hour ceremony in favor of a game no one cared about. (Stupid channel! Just cause you change your name from OLN doesn't mean hockey fans will forget how much your coverage stinks!) I cried as they retired his number and as he once again proved to be one of the most modest understated and admirable people to play pro sports. But he has moved on, and so have I. Therefore it is time to road trip again! I locked down about 4 or 5 good hockey trips and marked those out on my calendar.
I also "proctor" at an annual middle school math competition every year called MathCounts and that's coming up in mid Feb also. So I have several good trips on the books, but there's still more.
Last week the BX on base was "clearing out the freezer" and they had a big time sale. I managed to snag a ten pound box of pork riblets for $1. I was excited until I got home and realized, George Foreman doesn't do ribs. Well, he might but I can't imagine they'd be very good. So when you have a big pile of meat and don't know what to do with it, you call my friend Chris. You've heard me speak of Chris many times, most recently in regards to my Loganberry Quest. When it comes to cooking meat, Chris is King. He's got smokers, grills, deep fryers, flavor injectors, marinades, dry rubs, and all. So I offered the ribs to him and he suggested nothing goes better with riblets than a Superbowl. Yup, another road trip!
But he may need the ribs early so get a rub or marinade going on, so I may combine a trip to the new Krystal with a run by Chris' house to drop of a box of ribs. Tada! It's yet another trip. (Loganberry may make an appearance as well, but that's TBD.)
So while it may get quiet here at Krystal Adventure, it is far from quiet for me. I have added a few interesting items to my Krystal Kollection, and I need to get some pictures and post them as well. If I don't get out of town this weekend, perhaps I'll finally get to that. I guess we'll all have to wait and see, right?
So stay tuned (and go get some devil pups!)
Krystal Lovers get more in the sack!.
