Them toys ain't cheap!
After my post last week on my Krystal Toy collection. I mentioned the extreme price drop when you take a toy out of its package. The abbreviation "MIB" (mint in box) or "NWT" (new with tags) increases prices by as much as 300%-500% for some items. My experience has been with Star Wars toys of which my brother and I have/had a rather extensive collection. My friend Jimmy is the most knowledgeable person I know when it comes to the Star Wars toy market. His eyes glaze over when he thinks of my brother and my star wars collection in storage at my parents. So far my parents have not started selling them on E-bay as far as I know. My nephews go bananas over Star Wars stuff, so I am fairly certain it's only a matter of time before the boxes are dragged out and our stuff goes through another generation of use. I was at a convention one year and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) was there speaking. When asked if he got a deal on Star Wars toys he told the audience that as part of his deal he got one of each Star Wars toy they produced. This was greeted with gasps as everyone in the audience pondered the astronomical value of such a collection. Mark then added that he had children and thus had to make a difficult decision: Keep his collection in storage, or be the coolest dad on Earth. He decided to let his kids dig in. I think I saw people start crying. Anyway, I decided this morning to go check E-Bay to just check on the current prices for stuff I had. I know that my brother and I have some rather rare items, but I have no clue as to the value. As I hit the worlds largest garage sale, in another of the coincidences that seem to make up my life, I was greeted by this item for sale. (Lets all watch as Jimmy passes out.) You might be wondering why they are suddenly releasing this action figure. You see this year is the 30th birthday of Star Wars. Yeah, I know. It hurt me when I first heard that, too. I'm HOW OLD?!?!? If you haven't been paying attention, the History Channel has been running a series about it and the second episode is tomorrow night. Once you get over the shock of how long it's been, the shows actually quite amazing. It seems everyone has a Star Wars story. I have very vague memories of my parents taking my brother and I to see it in the theatre in NC. The thing that struck me and still stands out in my mind was that there didn't seem to be any previews or opening credits. The movie just started. Fasten your seat belts and hold on tight. While all the toys and shows and movies and goodies are great. There's still something missing. Thanks to Colby, my eyes have been opened to the Star Wars figures they never made but really should have: ![]() (If you don't get the joke you need to watch Star Wars again.) And now I suspect everyone is pointing and laughing at me for being such a geek. But you're probably just jealous cause you never had all the cool toys like I did as a kid! ![]() |

I never had any of the Star Wars toys.
I had a friend in grade school. His name was Walter. We were living in Wellsville, NY. His father was the Dean at Alfred University and was very affluent. They lived in a HUGE house the was amazing by itself. Walter had a lot of Star Wars toys, A LOT. I don't remember everything he had, but he had a lot.
I remember going over to his house and playing with those Star Wars toys. They were the first thing I went to. He often got tired of playing Star Wars with me and made me put the toys away. At the time, I hadn't even seen the movie, so my imagination went wild with those glorious action figures. What glorious toys, especially after seeing the movies! Those toys were great!
If I had those toys now, I would never think about selling them and they wouldn't be in storage. I would be playing Star Wars! Star Wars always makes me feel better. I wish I had those old toys.
You are a lucky man! Go rescue those toys. Get them out of storage. They are lonely and they want to play. Play for me.
