One of the most common questions I get from people when the first learn about me and my 'Krystal Thing' is 'Why Thursday?' Well its really not all that complicated. We do however have to take a trip. A trip back about 17 years and 80 miles north, to Conyers, GA. This is where I had my first real job. Back then, in 1989, it was Bruno's grocery store. I actually started there the day before my high school graduation. I started as a cashier, moved over to being a bag boy, or 'courtesy clerk' as we were called, and eventually wound up selling seafood. I worked there summers and Christmas for about 3 or 4 years while I was in college. The important thing, however, is that I got paid every Thursday. When you're a teenager with a paycheck, what's the first thing you want to do? CASH IT! Right in the middle there was my bank. At the time is was Trust Company. They've changed named a half billion times since then. I'd take my check, zip on over to Trust Co. and cash it. As you can see, from the bank you could just smell the Krystals cooking. So I'd take my (small) pile of cash and go for the good stuff. And here is where it all started. The Krystal in Conyers, GA. Please take note of the dandy parking job! It's comforting to know that Conyers drivers are still some of the worst in America. Way back around 1989 there wasn't a whole lot in Conyers. Atlanta was safely fenced in by I-285. Since then, Atlanta has broken through the beltway and eaten Conyers alive. You can no longer go from the bank straight to Krystal. You either have to make a U turn or go way around to the back entrance. What a mess! Once I had my bag of goodies, I occasionally ate at Krystal, but usually I would bring 'em back home. The house didn't look a lot like this back then. I remember when the yard was composed of dirt, and we had scrawny shrubs barely 6' tall. (Hey Pops, the trees turned out good after all. Well, 20 years later.) So now you know the story behind Krystal Thursdays. Well, actually only the early years. What about the next 12 years? Well that's a story for later, kiddies. Stay tuned, and I'll get to it eventually. So now the especially krafty Krystal adventurer could retrace my steps, but why bother with that. Its never too soon (or too late) to start your own Krystal Adventure. The choice is up to you, but, tomorrow is Thursday, and you know what that means.
